Mick May - Funeral

I regret to inform you all of the death of Dr Michael John May, known to many
of we ‘less young’ tennis players as Mick. He would have been 87 in
November. A keen sportsman, he played cricket into middle age but had also
competed at soccer, golf, bridge and, of course tennis. A member of Hallam
Grange and Hallamshire Tennis clubs he played in the local leagues and was a
longstanding supporter of the Sheffield and District Lawn Tennis Association.
My personal memory is of partnering Mick in the S&D Tournament some thirty
years ago.
In 1989 and 1990 he was President of our Association and created the May
Medal, presented annually since then to some individual recognised as having
given meritorious service to the Association. Educated at King Edward VII
school and then University of Sheffield he rose through the ranks of the
research and development side of the steel industry culminating in senior
management roles with British Steel, and being a member of, or chairing,
numerous Committees concerned with the industry. His roles were too varied
to be reported here but he became responsible for the industry’s technical
relationship with the European Community, and toward the end of his career
relocated to Wales for six years to ease the privatisation of the British Steel
Corporation and its relationship with major customers. Some of us will
remember playing at Swinden House (Laboratories) where Mick had some 500
staff working on research including links with schools and Universities.
He is survived by wife Connie, three children, five grandchildren and two
greatgrandchildren.
The funeral is on Monday 17th October at Ranmoor Church, 12.15pm. If
anyone who knew Mick would like to attend the service, please let me know so
that I can advise the family.
